WHAT Medicine, 19-21 June 2009, PWTC

Thursday, July 9, 2009

What is WHAT Medicine? WHAT stands for World Health and Asian Traditional Medicine. Previously, it is known as Women’s Health and Asian Traditional (WHAT) Medicine. The conversion to World Health is an expansion to the scope of Asian Traditional Medicine.

It was established in 2005 and was since held annually. So, what is the purpose of such exhibition? It serves as a platform to promoting alternative Asian medicine to the public as well as commercial arena regionally and globally.

Nirmal, Li Peng, Lee Yen, Sharmin, Me and one of the Alterni Staff, Ms AMUTHA.

This year, WHAT medicine was held in PWTC with the theme (i supposed) 'Natural Remedies for Health and Wellness'. For the exhibition, you can find wide range of health products and services, cutting-edge discoveries and the latest in holistic alternative medical technologies and products. Accordingly, there were 39 main exhibitors including Alterni, Hamdard laboratories, MAKNA, IJN, MARDI, NKF, Ruyi, Total Health Concepts, Well Again, FRIM, IMR, Entogonex, Energy Medicine, Fusion Creations, Holista Biotech, Nova Laboratories, MLF, Nutreeherb, Holista, Biofeld and many more. This excludes the food booth and a nursery site selling herbal plants. You can have free bone density check to check the risk of osteoporosis (OMG, I am about to reach the risk level), live blood cell check, BMI (including total fat, total water, visceral fat and so on) as well as goodies bag.

Photobucket

These were the goodies I got from this event, one from Alterni and one from KLIGP. There was another one goodies bag from Suruhanjaya Pilihan Raya (SPR) as I just newly registered as a voter.

There was Community Health Talk running in the exhibition hall at Level 4 discussing on health related issue in the community. Besides, there was Public Health Talk taking place at Dewan Tun Hussein Onn at Level 2. For this public health talk, it drew many members of public to attend to the talk as most of them got a special invitation from Alterni. The first topic on Saturday 20 June 2009 was Osteoarthritis and treatment using alternative medicines whereas the second topic on Sunday 21 June was on Evolution of Omega-3 fish oil in treating heart diseases.

Photobucket

Natrox is a newest product by Alterni used for relieving pain the natural way. It contains CCE 4800, an unique curcumin extract which has anti inflammatory and anti oxidant properties that can help in relieving joint and muscular pain caused by injuries and arthritis. Accordingly, NACOX has a higher absorption (4000x) rate compared to other curcumin supplement. Hence, better efficacy in treating pain. This patented Belgian technology behind Nacox was researched by Porfessor Yves Henrotin, one of the only 12 members of Osteoathritis Research Society International and International Cartigae Repair Society.

Running along with the exhibition was the conference named as Scientific Conference. It was a 2 day events held on Day 1 and Day 2 which was a paid conference as high as RM 500. There were various topics discussed by various high profile speakers. Some of the topics were:
- Traditional Medicine and Anti Aging -Changing Paradigms
- Halal Natural Products Research
- Development of Transgenic Artemisia annua L. plants for enhancing Artemisin yield
- Ginger moving from food to cosmetics
- Quality control and Standardisation of medicinal plants & products
- Nanocurcumin in experimental animal models
- Curcumin inhibits pro-inflammatory mediators and metalloproteinase-3 production by chondrocytes
- A novel extract of Labisia pumila useful for Th 1 immune upregulation
- Effect of Holoptelea integrifolia leaf extracts on blood glucose level of alloxan induced diabetis rats
- Unani medicine to prevent cardiology in light of Avicenna's book
- Vitiligo repigmentation- a cosmetic need
And many many more.

Pristin Omega-3 fish oil

I got this for free after answering 3 questions and filling up my details. One fishgel contains highly purified fish oil with 660 mg EPA and DHA. In order to ensure toxin free fish oil, an advanced molecular distillation technique known as OMATECH is being employed. It has double protection against oxidation. Mixed natural tocopherols protects against oxidation whereas the amber gas bottle packaging protects the sensitive fish oil against heat and sunlight.

Besides, there was also an Industry Dialogue Programme. It was a free to attend dialogue session starting at 9 am till 12 pm. Opening speech was by Yang Berbahagia Dato Rajen M, the organising chairman of WHAT MEDICINE 2009. The panelists for the session were
a) Prof. Larry A. Walker, Director, Research Professor of Pharmacology, National Center for Natural Products Research, The University of Mississippi, USA
b) Dato' Iskandar Mizal, CEO Malaysian Biotech Corporation (MBC)
c) Dr. G. N. Qazi, Vice Chancellor, Hamdard University, Delhi
d) Prof. Dr. Ibrahim Jantan, Dean of Faculty of Pharmacy, UKM
e) Mr. Loh Tong Soon, Yangtze Delta Region, Institute of Tsinghua University, Zhejiang, China.

One of stuff inside the goodies bag was this Bitfrez natural breath spray aka purifier.

Back to my job scope. For this event, there was surprisingly only 1 typist. The tags were generic and will be collected after visitation and redistributed to new customer (budget la). I was in charged as usherer together with Sharmin at ground floor whereas Lee Yen and Nirmal were in charged on 3rd floor.

Photobucket

Another freebies, Plantagor for constipation. This herb is traditionally used for astringent, anti toxic, antimicrobial, anti inflammatory, anti histamine, demulcent, expectorant and diuretic. P. psyllium is useful for constipation, IBS and as dietary fiber supplement. I haven't consume it perhaps may misuse it for dieting purpose. Haha.

Day 1: There was an event running together which is KL International Gifts and Premium (KLIGP) 2009. 95% of public that intended to go for exhibition were coming for this event. So, there was huge crowd and long queue at the registration counter for KLIGP wheres there is no queue at all for WHAT Medicine. Initially, I was being scolded for chatting with Sharmin as there was NO ONE coming for this event. My job scope had changed to be usherer for KLIGP. Most of the public did not read or see the title for the registration counter and were instead registering for WHAT medicine. While on half way registering, then only they realized they went to the wrong place. Most of the times I needed to guide them to where is the KLIGP registration counter, where to get the registration form and how to go the exhibition hall. On the other hand, I was pretty interested on the event registration company that handled the event. The crews got their own crew t-shirt and their job seemed pretty interesting with goodies bag to be distributed out.

Photobucket

Sharmin, Lee Yen, Li Ping

Day 2: Though KLIGP was over, yet there were people who confused with the official last day of the event. As usual, I need to explain to them about it and even need to answer them WHY. How would I know when I was not in charged of that event. I managed to persuade 40 % of the public who intended to attend KLIGP to cross over to WHAT medicine. Those who rejected were seemed saying 'Har..medicine ar..not interested la'. I met with Datuk Nancy Ho, the President of MPS but before I can slowly recalled who she was and to greet her, she already gone else where.

Photobucket

Nirmal and I

Day 3: The crowd was the least among the 3 days. So, we were asked to key in the data while waiting for somebody to register. I can stand outside the registration counter for 1 hour without attending any customers.

Colleagues for WHAT medicine 2009

Whether this event will be organised in next year was still a question mark. The response from the public was very poor and super duper far from the expectations of 10000 public as stated in the official website here. I managed to talk to a person whom I did not know but should be a VIP from his attire (couldn't see his tag). He asked me on the numbers of visitors as well as usual question WHY? So, I told him my personal opinion. The success of any event is dependent on the marketing strategy. How good your event is but nobody know about it is a failure just like this event. Many people who came for this event did not realise the existence of such event as most of them were either dragged by me to visit the exhibition or someone who happened to be at PWTC for jalan-jalan. Only a handful people know the event. Whereas, most who knew the event were invited by Alterni with a special invitation card delivered to their mailing address to attend for the public health talk. That's what I called marketing or promotion. Later, then only I found out the person whom I talked with was the Chairman of the WHAT Medicine 2009. (oh.. lucky I did not receive any complain lodged at me). Another issue was the use of abbreviation WHAT and there was no any other poster, flyers or materials with complete full words. If I am one of the public, how do you expect me to attend the exhibition when I don't even know what is WHAT?

Digi CAMPUS

Tuesday, July 7, 2009

What is Digi Campus? It is one of the most exciting prepaid plan that every one especially the students must have.

Photobucket

I had recently converted my plan from Fu-yoh to Digi Campus.

Photobucket

This is the goodies folder I got upon activation which includes D'Campus sticker (bet it is to clear old stock), 2 Regular Nescafe powder stick and a book of voucher with discount. (outlets include City Chain, Clinique, Genting Bowl, OhMega Forces, MPH, Optical 88, Pineapple Computer & Accessories, Pizzahut, Rasamas and Starbucks)

I am sure some of you may heard a plan called D'Campus. Previously, the coverage for D'Campus plan was within the campus of the participating 15 colleges and universities. It was a great plan that you can make calls within your campus for free to any DIGI number. However, it seemed to be most beneficial for students who stay inside the campus only or in another words, the campus hostel. Recently, Digi launched this newly featured Digi Campus of which the coverage now is EVERYWHERE.

This new Digi Campus plan comes along with one of the greatest attraction which is FOUR year validity. For those minimum user of hp, this can saves up your money and at the same time reducing the hassle to reload credits once it expires. Lets say you reload RM 30 per month, your total reload for the year would be RM 360. But, what if you only use about RM 200 per year only? When the credits expire, you need to reload in order to get your line active. However, this plan offer you 4 years validity. Once you sign up and reload, your credit validity will be up to FOUR years. The expiry of the credits is counted a year from the previous reload. Lets say you had signed up for Digi Campus and reload RM 100 on 1 August 2009, the validity will expires on 1 August 2010. When you perform reload of any amount such as the minimum reload RM 3 on 3 August 2010, your credit will expiry on 3 August 2011. The cycle continues until you reach the maximum 4 years validity and if not mistaken from the date you perform the first reload upon activation of the plan.

Accordingly, if you do not reload when the credits expires, your line will be turned to restricted mode and will be terminated if no reload is performed for more than 365 days. Whether the line will be active or not as in receiving calls & sms during restricted mode is a question. But, I don't think there is people out there who can't reload a minimum of Rm 3 right? Don't be sia sui~

Next attraction is the FREE calls to any of the Digi numbers. When you spend RM 2 in total usage including voice call, sms or data, all your subsequent calls will be FOC for the rest of the day. This would be great who those Digi users couple who can now enjoy FREE chatting over the phone for hours without worrying the phone bills. How about the normal call rates? The call rates to Digi and any other numbers is fixed at 15 cents per minute.

Another feature attraction is FREE SMS. Oh my.. Digi is about FREE stuffs. This FREE SMS is applicable to the 11 Friends & Family numbers. For those who have converted their call plan from different service provider to Digi, you may also add the newly converted number into the Friends & Family lists although the number does not start with 016 or 014. Besides, SMS to any other network will only costs as low as 6 cents per sms.

For data services, the normal charge of 10 cents/kb still apply. However, should your monthly data usage exceeds RM 30, the rest of the month usage will be FREE. However, I don't think this feature is applicable. If the users can spend RM 30 just for data usage, then they won't be mind of paying more or changing to a cheaper plan.

Eligibility age?
As mentioned, this plan is targetted for students and the eligibility age is below 25 from participating universities and colleges. You can check whether your institution is included or not here. After the age, the plan will be terminated and will be offered to sign up a special Fresh Grad Postpaid Plan. Otherwise, you can sign up for normal prepaid or postpaid plan that you wish.

What should you do?
For new customer, you may subscribe by purchasing a new Digi Campus pack at participating dealer outlets, DSS outlets or during DiGi Campus events at selected universities & colleges.

For existing D'Campus users, just reload any amount from now onwards and you will get the benefit of the new plan.

For existing Digi prepaid users, you can ONLY convert to Digi Campus during event roadshow.

For other service providers, you may convert to this Digi Campus and subsequently become a Digi Customer while RETAINING your existing number.

Do remember to bring along with your IC and your student card for validity.

Is there existence of such great deal?

Yea, why not when comes to Digi. The main target group for this Digi Campus is the students and their main objective is to attract more people from other network provider to convert to Digi. Well, talking about the coverage, Digi did poorly but only at certain places and at certain times. It doesn't have a big impact to me except during my birthday time when I cannot have the access to network for the whole night. Friends of mine who converted to this plan at the same day are Digi users (Vun) & other providers (Jasmine, Christine, Wilfred).

So, how about you? Between , I was labeled as Digi agent and perhaps it is now.. haha..

Holiday ended, new semester begins

yo.. wassup ppl!!! This holiday was the most productive holiday so far. What do I mean by it?

First: Gaining weight
Now I know why people say that office works namely typist (for me) can make u fatter day by day. This is because you are facing the computer for long hours and less movement. All the fat will be accumulated at your tummy..haha. Besides, I was surrounded with kaki food geng which always ask me to eat. Sigh. =P

Me and Jun Jun

One of the first few words I received from my old time friends when they met was ' Hey, why you didn't changed much? But I think you are fatter now' LOL. According to my sister, my face shape and her son looks alike ==> ROUND. So, when both of us cuts our hair, we looked fatter.

Second: Gaining money
As set earlier, I wanted to have a new working experience. I was glad I found something new but was deeply sad entered into a wrong company. Cheap labours + low payment + long waiting payment + what else? The core thing was I will be rewarded with CASH for all my efforts.

Third: Gaining new friends
Though the second point already a major drawback, I do enjoy my work but not the company. I made new friends in every event and mostly of them were very nice. (except the misbehaved guy, u know what I am saying, don't you?)

Forth: Gaining experience
Through every event I attended, I learnt something new from my boss, the customers as well as the collegues. The boss really taught me a lot of things which cannot be disclosed here.

What else?
From the working experience last month, I found out one thing which is quite crucial. When you start working, you have very limited time after works. Once you reached home , you will feel extremely tired and the next thing in mind is your BED. This is very scary as I too experience it. I found no time to blog as well as lost the tendency/urgency/interest in blogging which shocked many of my friends. I slept very early daily usually between 11pm to 12 am. Can you ever imagine me sleeping so early?

Upcoming days
Haiz new semester begins and its gonna be a tough one. Between, I will slowly blog the happenings in previous month before slowly write on the delayed post like Australia trip. Long long ago story..haha. So, if you want to cheer me up, let's find time and MAKAN together again. Hahahahahhahahahhahaha.

This was the Asia's biggest oil & gas show which served as preferred oil & gas exhibition for buyers and vendors in Asia Pacific region. More than 100 participating companies from over 50 countries were part of this high profile business event. This 3 days show enabled the traders as well as the public to view some of the latest products and technologies in the oil and gas industry. More info here.

Among the leading local oil companies and industry that participated were Petronas, Aker Solutions, Cameron, Delcom, ExxonMobil, Global Process Systems, M3nergy, Neural Oilfield, Olio Resources, Sapuracrest Petroleum, Scomi, Shell, Siemens, Sime Darby, Tanjong Offshore Services, Technip, UMW and others. Running alongside with the 3 days OGA exhibition, there was Subsea Asia conference held on 11th June with a walk in registration fee of RM 280 per person.

As usual, I was in charged in registration. The above picture showed the complete team members attached to Hall 4 led by Ms Eveline.

(I forgot some of the names..lolx)

What happened to Eve head?

The one sitting on the chair was the cameraman for us from different hall. Thanks =P

Eveline and I

Wai Ing and Ai Teng

Seemed happy but we had 3 days run of fatigueness. People was flocking in non stop from the time the registration started till it ended. The climax was the third day of which I had my lunch (the last one) only at about 4.30 pm. I was stationed in a multi purpose counter called Info Counter. I was in charged in doing registration for pre-registered as well as walk in visitors, those who had forgot their code numbers, students and medias. Besides, I had to issue receipt for those who wanted to purchase the Show Directory Book at the cost of RM 10.

Smile everyone
The event was very successful as it hit the target visitors of more than 20000 in just 3 days. With the huge number, it was somehow unavoidable to receive complain on long queue and some networking errors.

Cheers~
All these pictures were taken during the last day of the event. I did not managed to visit the exhibition as there was too many crowds at the registration counter. However, I managed to sneak around during the briefing day of which concurrent with the setting up day.

We went to celebrate the last day of working at Subway. I had never dine in before and glad to have the very first at Avenue K.

A very healthy meal indeed. We ordered the Special Choice of the day (different days different choice) of which cost cheaper. The sandwich of the day + a drink cost less than RM 11 including of tax.

Pulau Redang, 26-29 May 2009

Monday, June 8, 2009

A day after the successful Oath Taking cum Pharmacy Night 2009, a bunch of us went to Redang Island for vacation together with another bunch of Y1 juniors. We took Air Asia flight from KL to Sultan Mahmud Airport, Kuala Terengganu.

I never knew that we need to walk to the plane through the outdoor pathway. This was my first time taking flight by Air Asia.

Then, Chui Wei's father drove a van to fetch 13 of us. (total 14 in the car) It was so funny that when someone (forgot who) asked to shout out numbers to check every1 was on the board, her father joined in to this kiddy 'game'. We stayed at Chui Wei's house for a night. We were served with the famous nasi dagang and kerepok lekor which were so 'yummy'.

In the next morning, we went to the tour agency office, had our breakfast before boarding a bus to the jetty located at Kuala Merang.

The journey took about 45 minutes from KT.

Masjid Kristal Kuala Terengganu
We passed by this controversy mosque. FYI, sources claimed that the construction of this mosque was a waste of the taxpayer money. When I looked into the surrounding area, it seemed quite true as it is located within the kampung area. People claimed that it is more for tourism purpose than the prayer of which very less number of people perform the latter. When BN took back the government in Terengganu, all the money namely for the royalty of the oil which wasn't channelled to the previous state government was used to build up mega projects of which including the recently collapsed Sultan Mizan Stadium aged less than 1 year old.

Y1 Juniors

Ladies (seniors)

Me and 3 ladies of which I was in charged of 'guarding' them.

DAY 1

Redang Island
First time been here. It is true.

Tomas and his gf
Taken while waiting the time for lunch

My first time experience

Coincidently, we met with another bunch of friends who were here a day earlier than us. So, we took the golden oppurtunity to take photo with them.

After that, we had our lunch. Then, we cruise out from the land to somewhere over the sea for snorkelling. My first time experience as well and it was a great one. Saw many living creatures under the sea. It was hard to imagine the presence of such pretty landscape under the sea compared to the dirty yellowish river we usually see in KL.

After the snorkelling trip, it was the tea break time. Then, we proceed to the next activity which was BEACH VOLLEYBALL. The last time I played volleyball was perhaps during session organised by PK 2-3 years back. However, for this time, we were playing volleyball at different venue of which we won't feel pain should we fell down. Picture showing the guys 'setting' the ball while the girls in attempt to 'bounce' back.

Some facial expression. The centre pictures were the group pictures taken when I went to take back the ball thrown far from the court. Alright, it was my fault to hit the ball to hard.

MF joined us later on after some session of photographing. Thnaks so much to capture this sweet and sweat moment.

Mei Yin did not joined us for the game while some rested in the resort after 2 hours snorkelling session earlier. FYI, the volleyball costs RM 50. Don't worry. It was just the deposit money of which full return will be given when you return the ball.

Some of the picture taking session

You can see many ferries not far from the beach only at two times, one early in the morning and one in the evening when no more boats/ferries will be operating. After the volleyball session, it was our dinner time. We then took rest in the room before we were called to meet up for a wine drinkign session.

However, it turned to be a surprise birthday celebration for 5 babies including me, alvin, yen moi, chui wei and wei ling. Thnaks so much to all of them~ We were greeted with the cake and the birthday song singing at the Summer Point Bar.

Group photos

We then moved out from the place after knowing that own wine drinking will be charged RM 40. What kind of charges was that? At this secluded area but with ample space, it is indeed a good substitue. We can still her the live singing session from the bar and at the same time enjoyed our time here.

Group photos
After that, part of the group stayed to enjoy to the music while me and others went to tour around to Laguna and its surrounding to check out some chick... oops..to walk around only. Then, we gathered back at the same place and stayed till about 1 am to listen to the live music before going back

DAY 2

We started off the day with as usual a breakfast but it was an early as 7 am. Then, we headed to the Marine Park for the second snorkelling session. Here, I managed to spot 2 giant fish one on the north and one on the south of the place. So, you can imagine how far I snorkelled around that area. There were plenty of colourful and different varities of fish here compared to the spot yesterday. I actually met a friend here but I wasn't really confirmed at that time plus he was not wearing his specs that he can't recognise me too. I also managed to touch the star fish if not mistaken taken by one of the divers from deep on the bottom of the sea and managed to show to chui wei, boon jin and yen moi.

As usual, when reached back to the land, it was time for lunch. There was another snorkelling session purportedly to be the Turtle Bay at 2.30 pm. However, due to that many were not interested to join, we took the time allocated to rest in the resort. I heard that the plan to Turtle Bay was cancelled due to strong wave.

After the resting time, me and Tomas with his gf went for a canoeing/kayaking session. I never played this before and would like to try since the charges was only RM 1o per hour. After few minutes on the canoe, I seriously felt that I was expert and ready to go for a competition. It was easy to manoeuvre if there was only one person. For two persons, both need some time to communicate and learn to move together. good job to tomas and mei yin. We even race among us, looking to the beautiful landscape on the canoe, avoiding the divers under the sea who were spotted everywhere and joking around on the canoe. Too bad that Mei Yin did not allowed us to go further away as the waves were strong.

The girls on the other hand went for photographing session.

See how enjoyable they were jumping up in the sky.

The Y1 had a swimming session

Again, after our dinner, we checked some of our photos captured during snorkeling session. Each of the photo costs RM 5. The pic was taken at the shop with the beach boys.

Then, about 10 pm, we had another drinking session. We ordered a dozen Heineken which costs rm 108. After some dealing season with the boss, they agreed to exclude the wine charges only for us. We actually bought two bottle of wines. We chatted, laughed, drank beer & wine and dance till late night about 12 pm ++.

Day 3

Group photo

At the jetty

sweeties,,
Me, alvin, tomas & mei yin already on the ferry when this pic was taken.

Taken in the double decker bus.
This was the first time boarding on a double decker bus for most of us and it turned to be a bad experience. The air cond of the bus was functioning leaving us sweating for about 1-2 hours journey. We hardly took a nap as it was very dry and hot. MF then tried to identified the problem and asked the driver to adjust the fan from medium to high, Then, eventually the bus become so cold added with the raining that freeze us.

A special video clip prepared by MF. Thanks to him as well for the photos posted here. All photos were taken by him

Finally, I made my first step on the Redang Island and Terengganue. So, what's next? My upper arm on both side had sunburn that become so red especially after bath. Getting dark was not an issue for me as I actually intended to do so.
