This is a ridiculous reason for detention of Tan, the news reporter which is to protect her safety. Come on la... be mature and be relevant. How can you protect a person for life threat when you detained a person without acknoledgement? How can you said so when the detained person cant even called their parents or family members during the detention?
Tan had been released not more than 24 hours..perhaps due to the heighten pressure from the public.. So, in that case, is that mean that she had her life threaten only on Friday night 8.20 pm till the next day? So, starting from Saturday night onwards, her life's safety can be guaranteed? If you say for safety reason. why don't ask the detainee to first packed his/her neccessarities and have overnight stay at the nearby police station? Why must it be unknown places? As far as to my knowledge, the police stations in Malaysia have never being attacked except during the Japanese occupation.. rmb 'peristiwa bukit kepong'.
Acording to Home Minister Datuk Seri Syed Hamid Albar, he stated that Sin Chew Daily journalist Tan Hoon Cheng had been arrested “to ensure her safety”. He added that it was not his decision for the arrest but the police. HUH.. I thought ISA is under jurisdiction of Home Ministry and any ISA detention needed to be signed by the PM. So, Syed Hamid has no rights to say anything? In that case, why do we need YOU? Btw, PM signed the detention? That means he agreed to the arrest? or the POLICE act above them? Also, what is the evidence of Teresa and RPK has caused instability among the people? SHOW to US!
What these people said?
Lim Guan Eng
DAP was very upset with Kok's arrest as she was “a duly-elected representative, an MP, and a state assemblyman.
Lim Kit Siang
Parliament had to meet to amend the Internal Security Act (ISA) to provide for such a “new provision to protect the safety of reporters”. If not, that is not the purpose of the ISA.
S. Sankara Nair
I was refused permission to see Kok, who has been held at the Wangsa Maju police station since Saturday night. I managed to see Kok from outside the police station gates together with DAP members of Parliament Tan Kok Wai and Gobind Singh Deo. She appeared to be in good spirits despite her arrest. She remained cheerful and waved to us from the police station compound.
Mentri Besar Tan Sri Khalid Ibrahim
The arrest of elected representatives under the ISA would not solve problems and would only give the country a bad name. On behalf of all the elected representatives, I want to voice our protest over the arrests and hope the Federal Government will release her (Kok) soon. Kok had never shown any bias towards any race during state-level discussions and was mature in discussing and seeking solutions to problems faced by the people regardless of their race or religion. We (state government) made all our decisions collectively and Teresa (Kok) was part of the discussions which were frank and fruitful. This is the first time that an elected representative at the state level has been detained – it's a waste of taxpayers' money.
de facto Law Minister Datuk Zaid Ibrahim
The Internal Security Act (ISA) should not be used against civilians. The Act should only be used against terrorists or those trying to topple the Government by force. I will seek a meeting with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Abdullah Ahmad Badawi to have a frank discussion about this issue to seek his views as soon as possible. I know I am breaking rank here ... I am prepared to face the consequences. If I am to resign, I will do so. I am not a trouble maker and I don't want to cause any trouble for the Prime Minister, but I have my principles and will always be a vocal critic of the use of the ISA.
- OMG! Finally, there is ONE BRAVE person from the UMNO who dare to critics on the use of ISA. Salute you!! I myself do agree ISA if is used for correct way such as acting towards those terrorist but definetely not to any news reporter that reports the truth or a highly responsible assemblymen and MP who contributes a lot to the country.
MCA Presdent, Datuk Seri Ong Ka Ting
Journalists are merely reporting the news. They should not be detained under ISA for carrying out their duties.
Wanita MCA chief Datuk Dr Ng Yen Yen
The ISA must be used only for national security with the confidence of all Malaysians. But, if the ISA is seen to create a lack of confidence and confusion among Malaysians, then the Government must review it.
MCA vice-president Datuk Ong Tee Keat
If they had carried out any misdeeds that infringed any laws, they should be prosecuted in the court of law. This logic applies to all Malaysians, irrespective of race, creed and religion.
Opposition Leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim
This is clearly an act of desperation. We urge the Government to respect the laws of the land.
PAS Youth chief Salahuddin Ayub
The arrests were similar to Operasi Lalang in 1987 at a time when Umno was heading towards a political crisis. In this context, we have information that about 15 more people from Pakatan Rakyat may be detained to deflect attention away from Umno's internal problems
Joint statement by the leaders of Pakatan Rakyat
The detention especially on the reporter on duty instead of the individual who issued the statement, is a proof of UMNO's incessant manipulation of the racial sentiment to raise fear among the people. Even the Barisan Nasional components themselves are not supporting such a devious act. We demand that the government stick with their promise that there will be no more ISA detentions after this.
We hope that the government action is not a beginning of mass arrest of opposition leaders in their attempt to thwart the of Pakatan Rakyat to form a government.
Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi
Those detained under the Internal Security Act (ISA) have themselves to blame because they chose to ignore racial and religious sensitivities of the country, said an ex-detainee. Tthose detained on Friday had ignored past warnings and history when they chose to propagate disharmony in the society.
- This is in opposite view of Home Minister who said Tan detention is for safety reason. You see.. these Government people are talking different things in order to cover issue. I think the Malaysians are not that stupid and they know what is right or wrong. Don't you?
