What If I’m a Russian Spy?

If I'm a Russian spy, I will be entrusted to reveal the truth behind the America defeat to the Vietnam. Why Vietnam is almost the only country in the world that has defeated America? Shall it be a defeat or just withdrawal of American troops?

In order to so, first and foremost, I must of course fly to Vietnam and revisit the war zone.

Since Air Asia is voted the world’s best low cost airline 2009 & 2010, definitely I would not miss to board on a cheaper ticket. I have chosen to start my mission and land on Vietnam on 30 July 2010 (Friday). Why I choose this date? It is because the air ticket is the lowest throughout the month. Don’t believe me?

Nah.. The air ticket including the airport taxes and fees is only RM 169!!

My main destination is Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon. Why do I need to go here? The Fall of Saigon on 30 April 1975 marked the reunification of Communist North Vietnam with Republic South Vietnam and withdrawal of the American troops which allied with South Vietnam. How it is possible for Vietnamese Communist Party to win the Vietnam War while South Vietnam and American forces were armed with better weapons and more sophisticated equipment?

Ho Chi Minh City, also known as Saigon.

One of the major contributing factor is the Củ Chi tunnels. Củ Chi is a suburban district of Ho Chi Minh City which were constructed during the Vietnam War (1955-1975). To reach to Củ Chi from Ho Chi Minh Airport, I will choose to ride on cyclos. Cyclo is a tricycle taxi similar to rickshaws. It will be adventurous way to reach to the destination.

The Củ Chi tunnels are interconnecting network of underground tunnels located in the Củ Chi district and are part of a much larger network of tunnels that underlie the country. During the Vietnam War, it served as the headquarters base for Viet Cong or the National Front for the Liberation of Southern Vietnam (NLF). Viet Cong was a political organization and army in South Vietnam that fought the United States and South Vietnamese governments during the Vietnam War.

It was amazing to learn how the Viet Cong survive in this underground tunnel and it will be my tasks to reveal the secret. There are limited food and water in the tunnel and even AIR! If a person farts, the whole tunnel will be contaminated. These tunnels were infested with ants, poisonous centipedes, spiders and mosquitoes. During the active war, they may even need to remain underground for days. Their survival is miracle and plays a key role in the success of the Vietnam War kicking out the Americans.

The Củ Chi tunnels which are closed and camouflaged. No wonder the American troops can't spot them!

Some believe the success of the Vietnam Communist Party were strongly supported by the whole Communist bloc especially from Soviet Union, China and North Korea with their combat pilots and air defense SAM-6 surface-to-air battalions (Soviet).

The North Vietnamese Communist forces had won the battle leading to the reunification and the formation of the Vietnam today.

However, 3-4 millions of Vietnamese from both sides and 58,159 U.S. soldiers were killed in this historical Vietnam War.

The truth behind the success will only be made known to Mother Russia.
